The Interview
GirlsCanDo: What do you enjoy about being a massage therapist?

MK Scheldt: I get to help people relax and feel good in their bodies. I didn't get that growing up. After my first massage, I couldn't believe how good I felt. I wasn't athletic, and for the time I was relaxed, comfortable and safe in my body.
Part of being human is about having a body. When we are young, we love to be touched and feel good. It is not sexual. When we get older, our ideas about our bodies and touching change. But we still crave physically feeling good.

GCD: Making people feel good; do you think that's purely physical or do you rely on something more?

MKS: People have different names for it. Some call it God, Source, a collective conscience, a Buddhist sense of oneness, I don't care what you call it, love comes from all of those. When I work, my intention is to bring love with me to the table. Think of Mozart writing a symphony, or a mathematician sharing enlightenment, everyone draws from both past masters and something greater than themselves. Besides, it's more fun to be a part of a bigger picture.

GCD: How did you start as a massage therapist?

MKS: After my first massage I was so excited to learn this gift. I attended massage school for a year. I learned anatomy, physiology, practiced and gave many massages for free. Friends liked that part.

GCD: What is your schedule like?

MKS: I like being self-employed. I work 4-5 days a week and schedule about 2-4 people a day. The people who need it, I give more time. My work means a great deal to me.

GCD: What physical activities do you like?

MKS: In the past I did yoga. Now, I walk. I do Pilates. I work to improve my posture everyday. I enjoy moving, stretching, and I love dancing.

GCD: Do you meditate?

MKS: I do. It' helps me with focusing.

GCD: Do you still get massages?

MKS: Yes. And I steal every great idea I experience.

GCD: Are you ever grossed out to work on a person?

MKS: You know, I get this question a lot, about hairy guys, obese people. What fascinates me is, once a person is on the table, that all disappears. Everyone has a neck, shoulders and muscles. There is work for me to do. And everyone loves the sensation of relaxing.

But once this person had incredibly filthy feet. That's just where his issues showed up. I had to wash them.

MK’s TIPS on feeling good about your body:
My experience with massage informs me that feeling good is not about having my legs shaved. It requires contact with beauty and discipline. The basis of good health and feeling good about your body is relaxing and feeling safe physically. You can get this through yoga, meditation, stretching, tree climbing or anything. It’s about having fun. In whatever way, find a way that makes your body the most fun place in the universe.
